With the varsity boys cross country team taking the weekend off to rest, the attention was focused on Tipp’s other talented cross country teams. The girls varsity, boys junior varsity, boys junior high, and girls junior high teams all ran exceptionally well in the very muddy and humid conditions at the Alliance Invitational on Saturday, September 13th. With the sloppy course conditions, times were probably around 30 seconds slower than usual in the high school races and about 15 seconds slower in the junior high races.
The boys junior high team continued their undefeated season by beating an 18 team field. They scored a total of 44 points, 10 points ahead of Central Watts (Centerville). The boys team is considered by many to be the best junior high team in the state of Ohio in all divisions. Last week was a statement meet when they won the DI-DII race at the Tiffin Carnival, beating 47 other teams in the process. Sam Wharton won the race individually by just 1 second with a time of 11:32, Ricky Andrews finished 3rd overall with a time of 11:50, Nick Noone finished 8th overall with a time of 12:19, Tyler Prentice finished 15th overall with a time of 12:29, Grant Koch finished 17th with a time of 12:32, Michael Landwehr finished 25th with a time of 12:29, and Jay Schairbaum finished 27th with a time of 12:51. 220 runners competed in the race.

Tipp Cross Country DOMIN8s at Miami County Championships
Year after year Tippecanoe’s cross country program continues to grow in numbers and improve on their success from the year before. Just ten years before Tipp struggled to even field a varsity team. Now the high school girls’ team has 24 runners and the boys 14 with similar numbers in the junior high. Not only is Tipp now able to field a varsity team, but they are now able to proclaim themselves as Miami County’s top cross country program. Both the high school and junior high boys won their races on Saturday, September 27th; the high school girls placed second, and the junior high girls placed third out of the nine county teams. By adding up their four places Tipp scored only seven points, four fewer than Troy (11) and six fewer than Covington (13). A majority of the runners ran much faster than when they ran the course earlier in the year at the Bob Schul Invitaitonal.
The junior high boys won by the largest margin of the day and continued their undefeated season. They placed their top five in the top seven and their top seven in the top eleven, scoring only 23 team points and beating 2nd place Covington by 39 points. Sam Wharton finished 2nd overall with a time of 11:12, only 3 seconds off the winning time and 59 seconds faster than Bob Schul. Teammate Ricky Andrews, who beat Sam the previous race, finished right behind him in 3rd with a time of 11:14, 44 seconds faster than Schul. Nick Noone finished in 5th with a time of 11:46, 47 seconds faster than Schul. Grant Koch finished 6th with a time of 11:57, 41 seconds faster than Schul. Tyler Prentice finished 7th with a time of 12:07, 5 seconds faster than Schul. Michael Landwehr finished 10th with a time of 12:19, 19 seconds faster than Schul, and Jay Schairbaum finished 11th with a time of 12:25, 31 seconds faster Schul. 58 runners competed in the race.

Tippecanoe’s JH Boys Obliterate the Field at the Sidney Invitational
Tippecanoe’s junior high boys cross country team continued their undefeated season by winning the Sidney Invitational on Saturday, September 20th. Not only did they win, but they flat out dominated the competition. They placed their top five runners in the top six and their top seven in the top eleven and were only three points off a perfect score.
Ricky Andrews won the race with a time of 11:16, beating teammate Sam Wharton who finished 2nd overall with a time of 11:21. The previous weekend Sam won the race with Ricky not too far behind. The friendly rivalry between the two pushes them even harder to try to finish first for the team. The nearest competitor to Wharton was a full 30 seconds behind. Grant Koch finished 4th overall, just cracking the 12 minute barrier with a time of 11:59. Nick Noone finished only two seconds behind Grant, finishing in 5th place with a time 12:01. Tyler Prentice rounded out the team scoring by placing 6th overall with a time of 12:07. Seventh graders Michael Landwehr and Jay Schairaum finished 10th and 11th respectively with times of 12:12 and 12:15. A total of 99 runners competed in the race.
The goal for all the other Miami County teams will be to prevent Tippecanoe from scoring a perfect score of 15 next week at the Miami County Championships, a feat rarely ever accomplished in a championship meet. The success of the team cannot be credited to their individual talents alone. The inspiration derived from first year coach Peggy Osborn, along with the team’s great work ethic and competitive drive are the real reasons for their achievements this season. The junior high team will definitely carry on the rich tradition of running excellence onto the high school level for years to come.

Tippecanoe JH Boys Stampede Over Competition
As usual, Tippecanoe’s Junior High boys cross country team took home the hardware at the Centerville Stampede on Saturday, October 4th. Some spectators expected a close race between Tipp and Centerville Watts, who Tipp only beat by 10 points at the Alliance Invitational, but Tipp easily won with 36 points to Centerville’s 74. Their win over a 21 team field which included all divisions kept their undefeated season alive as they head into their final race of the season, the Central Buckeye Conference Championships in Ben Logan.
Saturday’s race was by far the team’s best performance of the season as Tipp’s top 6 runners all ran under 12 minutes. Sam Wharton ran 10:52 to win the race, breaking the 11 minute barrier for the first time this season. He trailed Centerville’s top runner for most of the first mile, but pushed through the second mile of the race like he was being chased by a stampede of elks. Unlike last weekend where he was out-kicked in the final stretch at the Miami County race, Sam was the one doing the kicking, pulling out the win by 2 seconds. Teammate Ricky Andrews just missed breaking 11 minutes, finishing third overall with a time of 11:00. Grant Koch finished 8th with a time of 11:31. Nick Noone finished 12th with a time of 11:38. Tyler Prentice finished 14th with a time of 11:42. Michael Landwehr finished 20th with a time of 11:52, and Jay Schairbaum finished 45th with a time of 12:29. 168 runners competed in the race.
To put this magical season into perspective, Jason Salyer, Tipp’s top high school runner on the top ranked team in the state for Division II, ran a personal best time of 11:30 in junior high. Both Sam and Ricky have been running consistently below that mark all season and Grant has ran around the mark several times this season as well. Tipp’s 2004 junior high team who won the CBC title and included several of the current varsity high school runners had 2 runners under 12. Tipp’s current junior high team, who will try to defend their CBC title next week in Ben Logan, has 6.
